The encounter at a glance

On 27 June 1877, thirteen-year-old Justyna Szafryńska was returning with her mother after an examination in preparation for First Communion at Gietrzwałd. Near the parish church she reported a vision associated with a maple tree. Barbara Samulowska, twelve, also began to report encounters. The girls described Mary and a repeated request for the daily Rosary. The events continued through the summer, ending on 16 September.

The setting gave their testimony a particular force. Warmia was under Prussian rule, and the Kulturkampf had placed Catholic institutions and clergy under pressure. The girls said that Mary spoke to them in Polish, the language of their homes. Pilgrims brought questions about sick relatives, their parishes, and the future of the Church. Their pastor, Augustyn Weichsel, recorded the events and served the crowds while Bishop Philipp Krementz arranged an investigation.

A century later, on 11 September 1977, Bishop Józef Drzazga formally approved the devotion associated with the apparitions. The wording of that act is more precise than a sweeping assertion about every reported message. The enduring fruit remembered at Gietrzwałd is equally concrete: families praying together, renewed sacramental practice, and the desire to change harmful habits. Its beauty is not a claim that Mary belongs exclusively to one language or nation. It is the assurance that the Gospel can address people in the intimacy of their own speech and then lead them into a Church wider than themselves.
