The Two Hearts

Cor Iesu · Cor Mariae

The Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, united

One Heart was pierced by a lance; the other by a sword foretold. They are not rivals but one love — the Son who redeems, and the Mother whose whole heart is turned toward him. To honour her Immaculate Heart is to be led straight to his Sacred Heart.

“and a sword will pierce your own soul too” — Luke 2:35 · NRSV-CE · excerpt

Pierced by the sword, encircled by roses: Mary treasures and ponders what she has witnessed (Luke 2:19). Her heart is wholly given to her Son, leading us to him.

One love — the saints and the popes

An act of consecration to the United Hearts · original prayer for this treasury

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, living and life-giving fountain of eternal life, I consecrate myself to thee. O Immaculate Heart of Mary, refuge of sinners and way to thy Son, I entrust myself to thee. United Hearts of Jesus and Mary, keep us in your love, and through the Mother lead us always to the Son. Amen.

The Sacred Heart (Friday after Corpus Christi) and the Immaculate Heart (the Saturday following) are joined in the Church's calendar.

“Jesus, our Saviour, true God and true man must be the ultimate end of all our other devotions; otherwise they would be false and misleading.”
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort · True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, 61 · Montfort Missionaries translation

Consecration through Mary is ordered entirely to Jesus Christ. Mary is not another destination or a rival mediator: her maternal help deepens our baptismal belonging to her Son.

“Every deed of Christ is a cause of glorying to the Catholic Church, but her greatest of all glorying is in the Cross”
St. Cyril of Jerusalem · Catechetical Lecture 13, 1 · excerpt

The Cross is not an embarrassment to hide behind the Resurrection. It is the saving self-gift of the same Lord who rises and gives life to the world.
